Michigan Locksmith Tackles Industry Licensing Issue

(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, April 03, 2015 ) West Bloomfield, MI – “The word 'license' creates a positive impact to both consumers and companies, but it is not always a need," shares Tequesta Locksmith, a locksmith based in West Bloomfield, MI. The company tried to tackle issues about licensing within the locksmith industry.

A Tequesta spokesperson mentioned, “Licensing in our industry is becoming a hotter topic. Some states already have it in place, but most states don’t. There are some obvious benefits to being licensed, but it’s not entirely a one-sided issue.”

Some states already require licensing. To name a few, Texas, California, Illinois, North Carolina all require locksmiths to be licensed to legally perform locksmith work. There are other states, and there will likely be others joining them.

However, the hot question is whether it is a good idea.

There are obvious benefits to requiring licensing. With many locksmith scams running amok, requiring locksmiths to be certified with officially registered information helps reduce the chances of scams. Although, most of the public does not know industry requirements; so scammers still could reach them. However, licensing would provide a barrier, making it more difficult to scam consumers.

The Tequesta spokesperson added, “If part of licensing meant that people in our industry were forced to keep training to keep themselves current, that benefits our entire industry as well as the customers.”

However, the spokesperson does not seem be to be entirely sold.

“On the flip side, there are a lot of older, truly established locksmiths who really know their craft, but they might not be able to pass a test, or they might not have the business acumen to feel confident enough to understand the legal issues behind it. Licensing requirements might put these legitimately skilled pros beneath the newer, lesser experienced locksmiths for the wrong reasons. Plus, there is a cost, and that added cost will get passed onto the customers. Believe me!” the company added.

Tequesta summarized by saying, “It depends on what the government is trying to accomplish by licensing. If it is trying to crack down on the criminals and force us locksmiths to stay current, then it’s a great idea. If it is simply a way for the government to grab money without protecting these older but less legally savvy pros, I’m not so sure.”

Currently, the State of Michigan does not require licensing. So for companies, like Tequesta, it is only an academic discussion. However, in the states where it is closer to being in more active legislation, this could become a really hot topic really quickly.

In those states that do not require licensing, there are institutions that can help consumers determine whether a locksmith company is credible. Better Business Bureau, for one, puts a locksmith company into a reputation study. In Michigan, the Locksmith Security Association of Michigan (LSOA) also lists established locksmiths.
