Portable Charger Company Compares Lithium-Ion & Lithium-Polymer Batteries Used For Portable Chargers

(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, April 10, 2015 ) Monroe, NJ -- With so many portable chargers on the market, it might be difficult to decipher which battery is best for one's portable charger use. Two common battery types for powering up portable chargers are the lithium-ion battery and the lithium-polymer battery. BatteryUniversity.com released an article with detailed information about these two batteries, and did an exceptional job combining the technical jargon with common language for the average consumer.

A Lithium-ion battery was designed – and eventually replaced – a nickel-cadmium battery, which had a higher degenerative rate and lower cell voltage than the lithium-ion battery. As lithium-ion batteries transformed from single-use to rechargeable, the battery life has a decreased aging process and low self-discharge, thus, having a longer shelf life than it's predecessors. In addition to these benefits, lithium-ion batteries also do not need to be randomly discharged nor require a prolonged charge before its first use. To further decrease the battery's aging process, it should be stored in a cool, dry place (ideally, room-temperature) at a 40% charge.

PermaCharger 11000 mAh portable charger contains a lithium-ion battery, and can quickly charge a variety of small electronics multiple times before its discharged. For example, a fully charged PermaCharger can charge iPhone 5 up to 5 times, an iPad mini up to 2 times, and a Samsung Galaxy phone up to 4 times before discharge. PermaCharger is also ready for use upon removing it from its packaging, so it does not require the prolonged charge mentioned in the previous paragraph.

While these aforementioned benefits make lithium-ion batteries an ideal choice for portable charger purchases, the battery possesses a few drawbacks. The cost to manufacture the lithium-ion battery is 40% greater than the production cost of nickel-cadmium, and there is a requirement for protection circuit to maintain safe voltage and current operations. However, there is a protection circuit built into each pack to monitor temperature during discharge, so it is not the operator's responsibility to monitor overheating.

A lithium-polymer battery was created in the 1970s and did not actually conduct electricity. Instead, this battery allowed for ion exchange and the design of the battery cell's thin structure (measuring as little as one millimeter) allows for thinner portable battery charger structures to be created. The lithium-polymer battery is comprised of partial gelled electrolytes to decrease overheating and electrolyte leakage during use, as well as to increase charging effectiveness.

PermaCharger 8000 mAh ultra thin portable charger, which will be released on Amazon.com during April 2015 will be comprised of a lithium-polymer battery. The 8,000 mAh portable charger will have a slightly lower battery capacity than the 11,000 mAh charger, but will be lightweight and have a slimmer profile.

There are certain drawbacks to utilizing the lithium-polymer battery charger in comparison to the lithium-ion battery. The lithium-polymer battery has a higher cost-to-energy ratio than the lithium-ion battery. Also, the lithium-polymer battery has a lower energy density and decreased cycle count when compared to the lithium-ion battery.

This comparison of lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries sheds light on which battery would best suit one's needs for a portable charger. While the lithium-ion battery is able to charge more devices before its discharged, its weight is heavier than the lithium-polymer charger, which has no standard sizes for its cell formats. Regardless of selecting a portable charger with a lithium-ion battery or with a lithium-polymer battery, its owner will reap the benefits of having small electronics charged at their convenience when a power source is not nearby.
