(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, April 26, 2015 ) New York, NY -- According to CNN on April 18th, 2015, New York state has issued a health alert as a result of a striking increase in synthetic marijuana induced hospitalizations. According to government official Governor Andrew Cuomo, over 160 patients have been rushed to the hospital within the past 9 days with synthetic marijuana-related emergencies.
Also known as "K2" or "spice", the synthetic cannabinoid has been causing a host of New York resident to experience adverse reactions. Similar to other synthetic drugs, these synthetic cannabinoids are being advertised as legal plants which have been coated with chemicals designed to emulate marijuana-like effects. According to the New York State Department of Health, users of synthetic marijuana tend to experience a variety of symptoms ranging from mild to extremely severe. Symptoms related to synthetic cannabinoids includes headaches, drowsiness, increased heart rate, confusion, and seizures.
The use of synthetic marijuana is most common among teens, it is marketed as a natural product therefore teens are lead to believe these substances are a safer alternative. New York Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services Commissioner Arlene Gonzalez Sanchez stated "Young people may be fooled into thinking that these substances are safe because they are sold over the counter or are in colorful packaging, but they are not made for human consumption. They are dangerous and can have significant, long-term effects on the brain."
The epidemic isn't just sweeping through the state of New York, Alabama Department of Public Health has also issued a statement in regards to a sudden increase in synthetic marijuana-related hospitalizations.
