Drug and Alcohol Rehab New York Supports Bill Prohibiting Colleges From Asking For Criminal History

(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, April 27, 2015 ) New York, NY -- David Powers past with drugs is now coming back to haunt him over 15 years later. The former St. John's University Law student had his acceptance revoked after the university learned further details about his arrest due to drug related charges in 1999.

According to court documents, in 1999 Powers sold narcotics to an undercover police officer and was subsequently arrested on charges of LSD and MDMA possession, with intent to distribute. Powers charges were lessened and his record was also eventually expunged after he successfully completed an inpatient drug rehab program.

After successfully completing rehab, Powers returned to school and graduated with a 3.9 GPA from Monmouth University. Powers also obtained a master's degree in taxation before being admitted to St. John's Law School.

After being accepted into St. John's, Powers later admitted to the university that he had formed a drug habit which lasted from ages 16 to 21, and that he also occasionally sold drugs. After Powers openly admitted to his past, the university then revoked his acceptance stating that they had an unwritten policy which prohibits the admission of any individual that have a history of selling drugs.

A court ruling supported St. John's decision to revoke Powers acceptance. A disheartened Powers stated "This ordeal, in a sense, became more damaging to me than the original charges. Anyone can Google me and find out about this."

A bill in the New York Senate will be the answer to prohibiting higher education institutions from requiring student's criminal history. Currently three universities, now including St. John's have agreed to refrain from asking applicants about their criminal backgrounds. However, Powers is still prohibited from continuing his education at St. John's.

A medical associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab New York shared her sentiments in a statement, "It takes a lot of courage for an individual to turn their lives around after forming an addiction. It's very disheartening to know that universities are discriminating against individuals who are trying to create positive paths for themselves. I wholeheartedly support the bill that would prohibit universities from inquiring about applicants criminal history. Criminals deserve a second chance."
