Research Has Shown That Prescription Drug Abuse Is Declining, However Heroin Use Is Increasing

(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, April 28, 2015 ) Boston, MA -- Marc Larochelle and members from Boston Medical Center and Harvard Medical School have collected and evaluated insurance records for 31 million people between the years 2012 and 2013. The records were evaluated to observe for any changes in patterns of prescription drug abuse prior to changes in the market.

A special form of the opioid OxyContin that's more difficult to abuse has been introduced to the market. Researchers have discovered that making opioids harder to abuse has coincided with decreased opioid drug prescriptions and a decline in overdoses among prescription drug abusers.

Despite a significant decrease in the abuse of prescription drugs across the nation, heroin overdose rates continue to increase. This has lead researchers to conclude that many prescription drug addicts have now turned to street drugs such as heroin to fulfill their cravings.

The team of researchers from Boston Medical center and Harvard University have not completely concluded what percentage of the rise in heroin use is directly associated with the decline in prescription drug abuse. Since 2010 heroin use has been increasing annually, however the rates increasingly accelerated after the special form of OxyContin was introduced.

It is suggested that heroin is the drug many are turning to due to it's low cost and easily accessible. Larochelle commented "If you take away a drug, it is not going to cure an addiction, so they are likely to seek out an alternative medicine to meet that."

A medical associate from Drug and alcohol Rehab Boston shares the same sentiments as Larochelle in her statement, "People who are addicts will find new ways to get their fix if one fix is no longer available. Initiatives to stop prescription drug abuse are definitely a great help, however more effort should be put into how to effectively treat substance abuse and addiction."
