(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, May 28, 2015 ) London, UK -- Sales of the Apple iPlus 6 Plus have helped the market for phablets quadruple in United States during the opening three months of 2015.
The term phablet, a merger of the words "phone" and "tablet", highlights the capabilities phones such as the iPhone 6 Plus provide for the user. The screens are big enough for those who prefer to leave their tablets at home but want to enjoy the convenience of a big screen device while on the move.
The iPhone 6 Plus with its 5.5in display ended the first quarter of 2015 taking almost 45% of the Phablet market which now accounts for around a fifth of all smartphone sales in the United States.
The impact of the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple's first phablet, is all the more impressive as just a year earlier phablet sales made up only 6% of American smartphone sales, according to figures released by consumer knowledge specialists Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
The launch of the iPhone 6 Plus, along with the iPhone 6, in September 2014, proved to have been a crucial commercial move by Apple. Prior to the release of its iPhone 6 range the company had never released a smartphone with a display bigger than 4 inches.
A spokesperson for accessory company Boom, which recently launched the “Shock-2” Hybrid Protection Case for both the iPhone 6 Plus and the iPhone 6, commented: "The iPhone 6 Plus offers users real versatility. They can enjoy the convenience of using a smartphone but with some proper screen real estate. Unlike in the early days there are not many tasks that can't be completed on the move so it is no surprise to us that Plus sales are so strong".
Previously derided, large screen smartphones became increasingly popular, especially in the Far East. By mid-2013 sales of phablets were overtaking those of the smaller smartphones in the Asia/Pacific region.
As for the Phablet market here in the UK the iPhone 6 Plus has been independently ranked as one of the best smartphone available.
