(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, August 20, 2015 ) Richmond, British Columbia -- Airline companies are now changing their rules with regards to carry-on baggage – making sure that they meet size and weight requirements. Most airlines are now clamping down on hand carry luggage and require oversized bags to be checked in and subjected to handling fees.
American airline companies have first cracked down on passenger baggage. Though travelers file complaints and constantly protest about unexpected fees at the airport, in the end, there is nothing they can do but pay for the baggage fees. According to some, they have wizened up and used a luggage scale to avoid paying for additional charges at the airport.
FlyerSights.org, an organization on consumer advocacy, advises travelers to check the airlines' websites beforehand to know how much the baggage fees are. Rules on luggage can vary depending on the cabin class, destination and whether the flight is international or domestic.
According to FlyerSights.org president Paul Hudson, "Two of the biggest drivers of airline profit are change fees and baggage fees. Know what you're facing. Decide whether you want to buy that ticket and how you want to pack and organize your trip."
A report by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics reveals that US airline companies have actually earned $3.35B from baggage charges back in 2013. With the recent restrictions, it is expected that more revenues will pour in for US airline companies from baggage fees, in-flight amenities and reservations.
According to the same report, only 75% account for airline fares whereas the rest are add-on charges. Revenue from check-in baggage fees has actually increased 5% since it was first implemented back in 2008. And now, Canadian airlines are also charging passengers for baggage, following in the steps of their American counterparts.
That is consumer groups are advising passengers especially frequent flyers to look for better ways to save on baggage fees such as planning before packing. Weighing luggage before going to the airport is also one of the best ways to avoid charges. A handheld travel scale, such as an Adfilic luggage scale, will help passengers know their bag weight and aid in decision making to avoid going over the bag weight limit.
