Report Shows That Consumers Should Be Wary Of Extended Warranties

(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, August 22, 2015 ) Richmond, British Columbia -- Retailers and manufacturers are pushing consumers to purchase extended warranties for devices, electronics and appliances. However, ConsumerReports.org revealed that extended warranties or service plans are actually not that helpful.

The Consumer Reports National Research Center recently conducted a survey and found out that 60% of shoppers are most commonly annoyed at retailers aggressively pushing for purchase of extended warranties. In reality, these stores actually keep 50% of the sales they make on extended warranties. For every extended warranty, the revenue they make is larger than selling the product itself. More consumers seem to turn to protective accessories, like a iPhone flip case, instead.

According to the report, purchasing extended warranties does not help consumers in the long run. It is only money gone down the drain again. Manufacturers are getting stingy on the warranties they offer so they can convince customers to buy the extended service plans by telling consumers that the extended period could help prolong the life of the device and have free services or replacements for gadgets and electronics.

"Some repairs are covered by the standard manufacturer warranty that comes with the product. Products seldom break within the extended-warranty window—after the standard warranty has expired but within the typical two to three years of purchase—our data show. When electronics and appliances do break, the repairs, on average, cost about the same as an extended warranty," according to ConsumerReports.org.

It is advised that consumers check the warranty that comes with the product before considering the extended warranty. For smartphones and gadgets, there are accessories that can help add protection to the product without paying as much as the extended warranty offered by the retailers. Protective cases – such as the Adfilic iPhone flip case – and screen protectors might help prevent damage caused by usage.

Buying from companies with reliable products and decent warranties should lessen the need for this shopping annoyance. And for those who will purchase extended warranties for large appliances, look closely on the included services. There could be lemon clauses and hidden phrases that would ultimately mean additional charges.
