Some experts believe that the only reason for taking down the site would be to upgrade the systems. However, the general speculation is that the website may undergo a major overhaul on the backend which has reportedly being problematic. Though the company has said nothing about the backend some employees within the company complained that orders were lost and that some shipments were delayed. Plus the recent increase in traffic could be yet another reason.
There are many businesses that decide to take the official or main website down for one reason or the other. Even big businesses that stand to lose millions of dollars during the down time often decide to take it down because there is no other way to upgrade the system or fix issues. In the past sites like Amazon and eBay have been criticized because the site went down without prior announcement. Even today few businesses would make an announcement about taking down the official website either for an extended period of time or a short while. "I think that our clients would be inconvenienced if they found our website to be offline for some reason. By announcing it, we are giving our customers a heads up so that they can make alternative arrangements. That said it is still undecided if and when we will take the website offline. What we do know is that it has to go offline because there are some upgrades that can only be done after its offline. We will also try to make sure that it is taken down during off peak hours especially for our customers in the US.
