(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, September 27, 2015 ) San Francisco, CA -- Suicide is the 3rd largest cause of death among youth aged 10-24 in the U.S. and according to a study completed by JAMA Pediatrics, teens who have been cyber bullied are twice as likely to experience suicidal thoughts. The new form of bullying is Social media, no longer limited to the playground or even school hours, teens are immersed in a persistent online community where everyone can see everything at any time.

Bullying has also evolved, less likely to be physical, bullies now use social media to harass, embarrass, and torment their victims. Teens are often too embarrassed to approach their parents or school administrators for help, while parents are blissfully unaware of the cyber bullying phenomena.

Students of the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) system were issued C hromebooks with pre-installed monitoring software allowing the teacher to monitor screenshots of the student's computer, keystrokes typed and access to the remote microphone as well. These measures were implemented to keep students safe online, although some Montgomery County parents are concerned with their children's and families privacy. At present, the school district is planning to release 45,000 of these Chromebooks pre-built with LanSchool's keylogging application to students throughout Montgomery County.

Another new trend among parents is mobile tracking of their child's smartphone. Services such as MamaBear allow concerned guardians to track their children's location in real-time via GPS. Other options include keyword alert notifications, chat messenger monitoring and search engine queries. Keeping track of a troubled teens Google searches can give parents and teachers an incredible amount of insight into the wellbeing of their children. According to the Google Keyword Planner there are over 3,000 queries per month in the English Language for "painless ways of committing suicide".

How many of the 5000 teen suicides taking place in the U.S. every year could have been prevented through parental Android & iOS keyloggers is more difficult to determine.
Privacy advocates are concerned with the growing trend of keylogging and monitoring applications. A computer forensics expert in Iowa's executive branch recently inquired about the costs involved in a transaction with an Italian company selling hacking applications to intelligence and police agencies worldwide.

Iowa's ACLU chapter was not impressed with the inquiry, "I'm glad they didn't purchase it, but disappointed that they even thought about it," said Jeremy Rosen, executive director of the ACLU of Iowa.

Today's teens live on their smartphones, and bullying via social media on these mobile devices has been blamed for suicides among teens and young adults. Facebook has been providing additional resources for friends to specifically report posts and comments made by acquaintances who they feel are suffering emotionally, or possibly considering suicide. Facebook is additionally considering their own anti-suicide campaigns to timelines of users who are in susceptible demographics.

The company is currently in development of parental monitoring applications for the Hispanic community, as well as Mac keylogging applications and parental monitoring devices for iOS devices.
