Revenue at traditional brick and mortar stores is on a general decline as more and more people embrace the ease and convenience of online shopping. This change is affecting everything about retail, including how an item is packaged.
In the days of brick and mortar retail, good packaging was large and eye catching to capture the shopper's attention and get the sale over a similar item positioned right next to it on the shelf. Extreme examples often left the consumer with more packaging than a product. Huge advertising agencies were paid large sums of money to design a sometimes complex package that would sell.
Fast-forward to today's online marketplace where that item just purchased on a smart phone will be boxed and shipped directly to the purchaser's door. Good packaging takes on a whole new role in this world.
A bigger box is no longer a benefit and simply costs more. It takes up more space in a warehouse, takes more room in the truck and or plane, thus using more fuel and increasing the overall storage and shipping fees which ultimately affect the consumer's final price.
Good packaging in today's online marketplace is a package that can safely deliver a purchase in the expected, undamaged condition using the lightest most compact parcel. Shocked by the huge boxes that were being utilized to ship their popular Mini-King Toddler Pillow, Cushcins took action.

Upon opening the box the pillow looks half its advertised size but once the bag is released the pillow swells back to its actual size. In a brick and mortar operation that would be product suicide but in this new era of delivery, this type of packaging is a must. A pillow of course has very little weight, but shipping and storage fees are also based on size. Often a large lightweight parcel can be more costly than a compact one with more weight.
It is a new marketplace and smaller is now better. A small carefully thought-out package will conserve material, fuel, money, and reduce carbon emissions all in one easy step. That is a win-win for everyone involved.
