(IT-NEWSWIRE.COM, April 22, 2015 ) Honolulu, HI -- Google recently rolled out what is considered to be the most aggressive algorithm update that could kill mobile search results and diminish rankings for many business websites. Some refer to this update as "Mobilegeddon". The algorithm looks for mobile-friendly sites. Websites not meeting the requirements suffer a drop in their mobile search engine rankings. More than half of business sites in the United States are not mobile friendly. According to data compiled by research agency SumAll, about 67 percent of Fortune 100 companies are not compliant to the mobile-friendly requirement.
Businesses with websites that do not meet the mobile-friendly requirements face a reduction in business. According to Google's commissioned research from Ipsos MediaCT and Sterling Brands, more than half of its searches are made on a mobile device. About 50 percent of those consumers will visit a local business. Businesses who have not adapted will not be found on searches conducted on smartphones. Google classifies mobile devices as smartphones; tablets and PC's are in in a separate categories. Online marketing services consultant, Eleni Davis said, "when you consider the data, businesses could stand to lose at least 25 percent of their business."
For many months Google has been monitoring websites and issuing warnings to webmasters. On February 26, 2015, the search giant posted the following statement on its Webmaster Central Blog, "Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices."
Davis offered advice to business owners, "the best course of action for businesses is don't panic and don't feel helpless. Businesses can still check their sites with the Google Mobile-Friendly Test; they can find out if their websites meet Google's requirements. In addition, businesses can still make appropriate changes to comply with Google's mobile-friendly requirements. Google's Mobile-Friendly Test can be performed online at: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/. If the website fails to pass the test, the next step would be to move quickly to get a mobile-friendly website up for the business.
