Though the company has said that a minor glitch with the security system caused the website to lag and then suddenly shut down, internet security experts are skeptical about the explanation. Some believe that a DDOS attack may have caused the site to slow down after which it was taken offline with the offending IPs banned from the system. That said the company reported that over 200 people from mostly the US were unable to make purchases in the military survival market.
Websites of the biggest retailers in the world with million-dollar systems can go down. Many websites despite the latest technology are still vulnerable to a very simple yet orchestrated attack called Denial of Service or DDOS. The attack works by sending millions of page requests in the form of visits to a website, which overloads the system and causes it to crash. Recovering from such an attack is not easy and often requires a reboot prior to patching up the hole. In some instances, the attack is so well setup that most websites can be defenseless against it. In the past big names like Amazon have been taken down by similar attacks. However, if the website went down owing to an attack the company will need to figure out the right contingency in order to avoid future downtimes.
"Our systems were not hit by a DDOS attack contrary to many claims that you may see online. What really happened was that a software glitch caused our servers to start lagging. This caused an increasing number of traffic to either get rerouted or lined up. The increasingly large cue caused the system to then crash. It appears to be a DDOS attack if you don't really look at the logs, but it was not. Thankfully we were there when it happened and had a contingency in place too. This is why despite the severity of the issue we were able to get the website up and running in no time." said the systems administrator for Stunning Gadgets "We sincerely apologize to people who were unable to make purchases online, as well as those who experienced our website hang up in the middle of making a purchase in this important survival gear niche."
The company has also said that people who placed an order twice as a result will be refunded. Stunning Gadgets claims that the issue caused the company a net loss of $2000 if not more.
