(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 23, 2017 ) Don't Burn Your House Down -- What is the strangest question that a Boise mold remediation expert has ever been asked?
How about: "I've got mold so should I just burn my house down?"
This question was asked to Boise Mold Removal professional, David Zedwick, by a homeowner that was seeking his help.
Don't Give up if You Have Mold
Many homeowners go into panic mode when an inspection report informs them that they have mold in their house. This problem must be taken care of before a home can be sold...and usually there is not a lot of time to get the mold remediated.
Southern Idaho and, especially The Treasure Valley, has serious home mold problems.
Why is mold so common in the Boise area?
What most people do not realize is that mold spores are basically everywhere both outside and inside of the house. Visible mold is formed when all of the ingredients are present to grow the mold.
So the answer to why it is so common in the area is actually quite simple. Mold, like other organisms, must have three things in order to grow:
o Food
o Water (moisture)
o Proper Temperature.
"Food is available in attics and basements as well as on our walls. The food is the wood or paper in our attics and on our walls," David says. "Paper on the sheet-rock can actually become food for the mold."
Water can accumulate in to one of these areas through leaks or lack of air circulation and proper ventilation. This sets up the final ingredient, temperature.
The Boise and Treasure Valley areas have ideal temperatures for mold two times a year...spring and fall.
Even though it can grow during the other two seasons of the year, spring and fall set up the ideal temperatures for 'growing mold'.
The Main Cause
David admits, "Leaks in roofs or pipes can certainly be the cause of mold. But the main cause seems to be lack of ventilation".
If roof vents are covered with insulation or moisture is trapped in a space in the house, there is an excellent chance that mold will form.
So what is the best method of actually getting rid of it? In most cases, it best to get an expert out to take a look at it. And once it has been written in a home inspection report that you have mold, you will probably have to get an expert that can re-mediate the mold and give the new homeowner a guarantee that it will not come back for a year or two.
But it can be taken care of. The price will vary according to the size of the job, but a good Boise mold remediation company can give you an estimate of costs.
So, Should You Burn Your House Down?
In centuries past, some societies actually did burn their house down when mold was discovered in the house.
Today, just find a qualified professional mold remediation company and have them get rid of it. And they can tell you what to do to keep it from coming back. Get the mold taken care of right and your house will be fine. But don't burn your house down.
